Tips to get the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Summertime is high season in the Ocracoke area. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers frequently offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Many rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which often include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to pick the perfect vacation home:

  • Start by having your group decide on dates and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Hydeaway: Convenient to Restaurants, Shops and Silver Lake has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available online. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before you book the rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or could be applied to your invoice.

Tips for your stay:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. Call the property manager right away to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
