Finding the best vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your spending budget:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. Booking in the Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Property managers usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain offers and deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.

Filter your search:

  • Begin by selecting your a vacation week and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Escape Hatch: Pet friendly home, tucked among the trees, rooftop deck has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you reserve the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke destination you long to visit, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .

More tips for your visit:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • To make certain that no damages are linked to your family's visit, inspect the property for any problem areas upon your arrival. E-mail the property manager right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected everything. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to inspire future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
