Tips to get the best vacation home experience:
Finding the best value:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Ocracoke vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Booking websites often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain deals for local accommodations and attractions.
Selecting the best vacation home in the Ocracoke area:
- Choose vacation dates and budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Out Of The Blue: Soundfront, spectacular sunsets, private boat dock. has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you book your home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you are crazy about, browse rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
Some things to know before you go:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To make certain that no damages are attributed to your visit, make a record of any problem areas during check in. message the rental manager immediately to record any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be an incredible resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
