Ocracoke vacation rental booking tips and tricks:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, shift your vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property managers usually offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines that include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • To start, have your group select trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Wild Peony: Incredible views from the ever popular rooftop deck! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the host before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask your host about your furry family members before booking.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Record any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if damages are assessed.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent resource to find the best local spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a fantastic vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
