Our top Rental home tips:

Sticking to a spending budget:

  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation rental six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • To get the best value, try changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, , and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on local shops and restaurants.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Choose your vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Serendipity: Historic Home with Modern Conveniences has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible online. Otherwise, email the property management company before you book your home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.

Tips for a fantastic stay:

  • Store the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many issues.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that damages aren't attributed to your visit, inspect the property for any problem areas during check in. Make contact with the host immediately to document your findings. If there is a dispute, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
