Ocracoke rental home tips and tricks:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can book, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are booked early. Booking your vacation home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the best rental within your budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Ocracoke attractions and restaurants.
  • Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers typically offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which often include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Make a plan and choose your Ocracoke rental home:

  • Choose your vacation dates and budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. The Dock House: Waterfront on canal in Oyster Creek has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property manager before booking the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what is right for your vacation family.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or charges might be applied to your invoice.
  • Does your family require special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.

More tips for your visit:

  • Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • At Check-in, note any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and look for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Hosts rely on good reviews to propel new bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
