Tips for getting the perfect Ocracoke rental home experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • To get the best value, consider shifting your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your rental property 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to select the perfect rental home:

  • First, have your group select date ranges and a budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Livin' Outta Line: Canal front home with private dock, sunrise views. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before booking the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke destination you simply love, browse properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Add the property manager's contact information to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Record any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of problems.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your life at home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on good reviews to inspire future bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
