Strategies for getting the best Ocracoke rental experience:

Get the most from your budget:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in Ocracoke. Reserve your Ocracoke rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Narrow your Search:

  • Start by choosing your potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group needs. Ride About is a relaxing and comfortable island home and offers offsite docking. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the property management company before booking the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is suitable for your family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

Have a fantastic stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
  • During check-in, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be respectful. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • At departure, take a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
