Tips for getting the perfect vacation rental experience:

Getting the best value:

  • The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your rental property six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • To get the best value, try changing your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides that include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to choose and book the right Ocracoke rental home:

  • Begin by selecting vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available on booking pages. If not, email the host before you book your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about pets before booking.
  • Is your group looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Tips for your stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Note any issues with the property at check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and look for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
