How to book the best Ocracoke rental experience:

Sticking to your budget:

  • The sooner you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your rental property up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Summer time is high season in the Ocracoke area. To get the best value, consider changing your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your group commit to date ranges and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, call the host before booking the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is right for your trip.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or applied to your invoice.
  • Is your family looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Note any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a terrific stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
