Our top Rental home booking tips:

When to visit & When to book:

  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. Book your Ocracoke vacation home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides contain coupons for local shops and restaurants.

How to choose the perfect rental home in the Ocracoke area:

  • Start by having your group commit to vacation dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. A Ferry Trail Ending: Dog friendly, two wings joined by screened porch has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what configuration is optimal for your group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you are enamored with, browse rentals that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Tips for a smooth stay:

  • Add the host's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Upon check-in, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Just before checking out, take a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent reviews to propel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
