Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:

When to visit & When to reserve a rental home:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Reserve your Ocracoke vacation in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Start by selecting a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Sunspace: Quiet location, screened porch, deck, treetop sunsets has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is normally accessible online. If they are not listed, email the property management company before reserving the home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is best for your family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke attraction you love, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Additional considerations:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are an incredible source for finding the best local spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
