Rental home tips:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • Summer time is high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm weather, , and reduced traffic.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers frequently offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

How to select the perfect rental:

  • Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Art-Sea: Architectural beauty, private boat dock has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If they are not listed, email the property management company before you reserve the home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.

Additional considerations:

  • Be sure you get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, inspect for any problem areas when you arrive. Call the property manager immediately to report any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your vacation home while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at departure. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to inspire more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
