Booking the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. To get the most suitable rental home within your budget, we highly recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Ocracoke attractions. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

How to select the perfect rental home in Ocracoke:

  • Select your vacation week and spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration you need. Canel Cottage: Tucked in the trees, nearby kayak launch area. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly accessible online. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before you reserve the rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is suitable for your family.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about your furry family members before booking.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you love, keep an eye out for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • To make certain damages are not attributed to your family's visit, note any problem areas upon check in. Contact the host right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent resource to find the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to drive more bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
