Strategies to get the perfect Ocracoke rental home experience:

How to get the best value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Ocracoke. Reserving a rental home in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to select the perfect vacation rental:

  • Begin by selecting your the best vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Canel Cottage: Tucked in the trees, nearby kayak launch area. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available online. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before booking the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you are enamored with, search for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Some properties allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about pet restrictions before booking.

Additional considerations:

  • Put the owner's information in your smartphone.
  • To make certain that no damages are linked to your stay, make note of any problem areas during arrival. Get in touch with the property manager immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a excellent vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
