Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Finding the best value:

  • Summer months are high season in Ocracoke. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved early. Booking your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which will include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by selecting your vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Tom Frank Gaskins: Dog friendly historic home located near the harbor. has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. If not, email the property management company before booking the home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what configuration is suitable for your family.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke beach you long to visit, search for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
  • Some properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Have a fantastic stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your .
  • To ensure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the property manager immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
