Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Ocracoke rental experience:
Getting the best rental value:
- The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
- Reserve your vacation in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
- Some hosts offer discounts for veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides have coupons for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Narrow your Search:
- To start, have your family select the best dates and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Shrimp and Grits: Cozy home in a secluded neighborhood has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before reserving the home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what configuration is right for your trip.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- If there's an individual Ocracoke beach you love, look for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Know before you go:
- Add the host's contact info to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your home life. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Leave feedback! Property owners rely on great ratings to compel new bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
