Tricks and tips to get the best rental experience:
Sticking to your budget:
- Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Book your vacation home in Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Filter your rental search:
- To start, have your group decide on date ranges and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Shrimp and Grits: Cozy home in a secluded neighborhood has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what configuration is right for your vacation family.
- Does your family require special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- If your group is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly rental. Get details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if there is a dispute.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a terrific source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to propel future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
