Strategies to get the perfect Ocracoke rental experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best value, change your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to select the perfect rental in Ocracoke:

  • Start by having your group choose date ranges and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Shrimp and Grits: Cozy home in a secluded neighborhood has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the host before you book your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what configuration is suitable for your vacation.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

Additional considerations:

  • Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Document any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great source for finding the best local spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent reviews to inspire more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
