Tips and Tricks for getting the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best value, change your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, , and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which often include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your group commit to date ranges and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Poker House: Waterfront home on a canal in Oyster Creek. has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve your home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish which bed configuration is optimal for your group.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs applied to your contract.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke destination you crave, look for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

More considerations for your visit:

  • Store the owner's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few difficulties.
  • Lock your rental home while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • To make sure that damages aren't linked to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. Get in touch with the host immediately to record your findings. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your home life. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
