How to get the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

When to reserve a Ocracoke rental & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Reserving a rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • The earlier you can book, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies often offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • To start, have your family commit to the best dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. The Lost Puppy: Dog friendly home in Jackson Dunes has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the host before reserving your home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your group.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your agreement.

Advice for a fantastic stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the instructions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • At Check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a terrific resource to find the best local beaches.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
