Strategies to get the optimal vacation property experience:

Finding your perfect rental home:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Reserve your rental home in Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides have coupons for local shops and restaurants.

Finding the perfect rental in the Ocracoke area:

  • Start by selecting vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Mary Fisher: Tucked away on a one-way street, near Springer's Point. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible online. Otherwise, email or call the host before booking the vacation home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what bed configuration is right for your vacation.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or may be applied to your invoice.
  • Visiting for a single attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

More tips for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
  • Document any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • At departure, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent ratings to stimulate new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
