Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Ocracoke vacation home experience:
When to go & When to book:
- The earlier you can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Summer is high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, shift your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers frequently offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides have offers and deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

- Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Evening Shade: Secluded Home Near Lighthouse Off-Site Boat Slip has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.

- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
Advice for a fantastic stay:
- Be sure you get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- At Check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to drive future reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
