Booking the best rental experience:
How to get the best value:
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the best rental within budget, we highly recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Ocracoke restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Some owners offer special rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Filter your rental search:
- Select dates and budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Cozy Island Cottage, centrally located in the Heart of the Village has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, email the property management company before booking the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.
- If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you are crazy about, search for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
Have a fantastic stay:
- Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
- At Check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your life at home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on good reviews to inspire future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
