Tips for getting the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:

When to book a Ocracoke rental & When to go:

  • Reserve your rental in Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to pick the perfect vacation home:

  • Begin by selecting your trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Soundfront Inn: Spacious historic home with beach on Pamlico Sound has 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before reserving the property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is suitable for your group.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property managers charge additional pet fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the owner's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on good feedback to inspire new bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
