Our top Ocracoke rental property booking tips:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To book the largest rental within budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular attractions. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked early. Booking your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites usually offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to choose the perfect vacation home in the Ocracoke area:

  • Start by having your group decide on the best dates and a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Aleta: Pet friendly, waterfront, perfect for two. Private docking. has 1 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before you reserve the rental. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
  • Does your group require unique amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about pets before booking.

Tips for your stay:

  • Get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of problems.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're out! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all of your things. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
