Our top Vacation rental tips and tricks:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • Summer time is high season in Ocracoke. To get the best rental home for your budget, we suggest booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies frequently offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Selecting the best vacation home:

  • Start by having your group choose vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration you need. Saltwater Therapy: Pet-Friendly Condo in the heart of Ocracoke Village has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what is best for your vacation group.
  • Visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • To make certain damages are not linked to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas upon check in. Call the host immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few problems.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Lock your rental home while you are away. Keep your property safe!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected everything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a excellent vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
