Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Cost saving strategies:

  • To get the best value, change your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer special rates for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and select a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Crows Nest: Dog friendly home, wonderful decking, screened porch. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before booking your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
  • Does your family require special amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or might be applied to your invoice.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
  • Note any issues with the property at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your quiet neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
  • Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
