Tips for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Booking your rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain coupons for local accommodations and attractions.

How to select the best vacation home:

  • Select a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Brush Stroke: Nicely decorated dog friendly with marsh views. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is commonly available online. If they are not listed, call the property management company before you book the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If there's a certain Ocracoke destination you are crazy about, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Advice for your stay:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're out! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on good feedback to compel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
