Strategies for getting the best vacation rental experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • Book your Ocracoke vacation in Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites often offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which often include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Make a plan and pick the right Ocracoke vacation home:

  • Select a designated group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Reflections: Canal front home, beautiful marsh views. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is normally accessible on booking websites. If not, call the host before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke attraction you simply love, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More considerations:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of concerns.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • During arrival, record any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • At departure, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
