Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation property experience:

When to visit Ocracoke & When to reserve a Ocracoke rental home:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. Book your Ocracoke rental home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers often offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Start by selecting your the best vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Beach Therapy: Dog friendly, spacious interior and screened porches. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking websites. If not, email the property management company before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke destination you are crazy about, browse homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

During your stay:

  • Add the host's information to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • During arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave feedback! Property owners rely on good ratings to inspire more reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
