Vacation rental tips:

Finding your perfect rental:

  • Summer time is high season in the Ocracoke area. To get the best rental within your budget, we recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides have offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.

Choosing and booking the rightrental:

  • Choose vacation dates and budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Beach Therapy: Dog friendly, spacious interior and screened porches. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is regularly accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the host before reserving your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke beach you crave, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • To make certain that damages are not linked to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas upon check in. Make contact with the host immediately to document any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a great stay? Many rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
