Booking the best Ocracoke vacation home experience:
Sticking to a rental home budget:
- To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Ocracoke trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Selecting and booking a perfectrental home:
- First and foremost, have your family decide on trip dates and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your family needs. Sawbones: Unique Pet Friendly A Frame Home has 4 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before booking the vacation home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what configuration is suitable for your trip.
- If there's an individual Ocracoke beach you are enamored with, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.
More considerations:
- Add the owner's contact info to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Upon check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of issues.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a great resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Lock your vacation home while you are out and about. Protect your property!
- Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to compel more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
