Tricks and tips to get the very best Ocracoke rental home experience:

Get the best value:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Booking in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.

Planning and picking your Ocracoke vacation home:

  • Start by choosing your the best vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Sandpiper Cottage - Fabulous home with expansive deck has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available online. If not, reach out to the property management company before booking the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask your host about pet restrictions before booking.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke attraction you are crazy about, browse homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Advice for your stay:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's visit, inspect the property for any problem areas upon check in. Make contact with the rental manager immediately to document any issues. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
