How to get the best Ocracoke rental home experience:

When to go & When to reserve a rental home:

  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. Reserve your Ocracoke vacation in the Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Select a group lead, choose your dates, and choose a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Conched Out: Close to Ocracoke's beaches, screened porch, deck views has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the host before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts charge additional pet fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
  • To make sure no damages are linked to your visit, make note of any problem areas during check in. Call the host right away to record any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peace. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on great ratings to inspire new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
