How to book the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • To get the best value, consider changing your vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property managers typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

How to choose the perfect vacation home in Ocracoke:

  • To start, have your group select a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Anticipation: Private dock, wrap around deck, expansive sound views. has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is often available on booking pages. If not, email the host before you book the rental. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your group.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you are enamored with, look for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges might be applied to your contract.

More tips for your visit:

  • Add the property manager's information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • At Check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many issues.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an excellent source for finding the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to make sure you've collected everything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on good reviews to compel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
