Getting the best Ocracoke rental experience:

Finding the best rental home value:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, try changing your family's Ocracoke trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Owners sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to choose the best vacation rental:

  • Select your vacation dates and max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Anticipation: Private dock, wrap around deck, expansive sound views. has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, call the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.

More tips for your stay:

  • We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
  • Upon check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great source for finding the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a wonderful time? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
