Ocracoke rental home tips and tricks:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. To get the best value, shift your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which often include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to pick the best rental home in the Ocracoke area:

  • Select your dates and max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Teacher's Lair: Beautiful waterfront home on a canal in Oyster Creek has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property manager before you reserve the home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to establish what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke beach you are crazy about, browse homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable breeds and types before booking.

During your stay:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • At Check-in, note any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Keep the property locked while you are away! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
  • Just before checking out, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to propel future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
