Rental home booking tips:

Sticking to a spending budget:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the Ocracoke area. Book your rental home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides have discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

Selecting the perfect rental:

  • To start, have your family agree to dates and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. The Mary Francis: Dog friendly, near Springers Point and Lighthouse has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is normally available online. Otherwise, reach out to the host before you book the home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
  • If your family is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental

Considerations for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a great stay? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
