Tips and Tricks to get the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:

When to reserve a Ocracoke rental home & When to go:

  • Summer is high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, try shifting your family's Ocracoke vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines which will include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Selecting the best vacation rental in Ocracoke:

  • First and foremost, have your family commit to trip dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. The Mary Francis: Dog friendly, near Springers Point and Lighthouse has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking websites. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you reserve the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what is best for your vacation.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke destination you love, keep an eye out for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • If your family is bringing pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.

Tips for a smooth stay:

  • Add the host's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas upon check in. Get in touch with the host right away to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an incredible resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great time? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
