Our top Ocracoke vacation rental home tips and tricks:
When to book & When to go:
- To get the largest rental within budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at Ocracoke restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can book, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Some property managers offer rate reductions for veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Booking websites often offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines contain coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- To start, have your family choose trip dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Off The Beaten Path: Surrounded by trees and nicely secluded. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving your home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds. You will need to work out which bed configuration is right for your family.
- Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly property. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's contact information to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Upon check-in, document any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your life at home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental property while you are out! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a great time? Many rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
