Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, consider changing your family's Ocracoke vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers often offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Planning and picking the right Ocracoke vacation home:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your dates, and choose a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. The Back House: Quaint two bedroom Ocracoke Island cottage has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts is often available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property management company before reserving your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking

Advice for your stay:

  • Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • During check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great source for finding the best local spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on good reviews to inspire future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
