Strategies to get the optimal Ocracoke rental experience:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. Reserve your Ocracoke vacation in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your vacation rental six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your group qualifies for a discount.
  • Property managers typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • First and foremost, have your group choose a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Lindley: Near restaurants, spacious screened porch, rooftop deck. has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before booking the rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.

Have a wonderful stay:

  • We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Record any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good ratings to stimulate new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
