Strategies for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Get the most from your spending budget:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation rental six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. Reserve your Ocracoke vacation in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, travel guides have discounts for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Filter your rental search:

  • Choose a group leader, select your vacation dates, and select a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Crab Shack: Ocracoke Cottage within walking distance of shops and restaurants. has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, call the host before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke beach you are crazy about, browse rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental

Advice for a great stay:

  • Add the property manager's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To make sure that damages are not attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas during check in. Call the property manager right away to document any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a excellent time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
