Tips and Tricks to get the optimal rental experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Ocracoke area. Booking your vacation home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which often include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select dates and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Ocracoke Cottage within walking distance of shops and restaurants. has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is regularly accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before you book the property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your group is bringing pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Does your group require particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Tips for your stay:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • To make sure damages are not attributed to your visit, inspect for any problem areas upon check in. Get in touch with the property manager right away to record any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a great stay? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
