Our top Ocracoke vacation rental tips and tricks:

Getting the most from your budget:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To get the best vacation home within budget, we suggest reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Ocracoke attractions and restaurants. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guides contain discounts for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Make a plan and choose a perfectvacation home:

  • Start by choosing potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Blue Crab: Spacious screened porch, short stroll to the coffee shop. has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is normally available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
  • Looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or might be applied to your invoice.

Advice for a great stay:

  • Get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your . We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Upon check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a great vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
