Ocracoke rental booking tips:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, consider shifting your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer great weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies often offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Narrow your Search:

  • Begin by choosing a vacation week and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Cozy Island Cottage, centrally located in the Heart of the Village has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often available online. Otherwise, contact the property owner before booking the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or could be applied to your contract.

During your stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. Speak to the host immediately to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect your property!
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to propel future bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
