Strategies to get the best Ocracoke rental experience:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer time is high season in the Ocracoke area. Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties.
  • Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to choose and book a perfect Ocracoke rental:

  • First and foremost, have your group decide on trip dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Fried Ocra: Pet friendly, marsh and pond views, decks, screened porch has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what is suitable for your family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental

Additional considerations:

  • Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • During check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
