How to find the best vacation property experience:

Getting the best value:

  • To book the best rental within your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your rental 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides contain offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.

Selecting and booking the rightrental home:

  • Select your vacation week and max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Morningside: Large Ocracoke home with amazing views from rooftop deck has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually available online. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before booking the vacation property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.

Advice for a wonderful stay:

  • We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • During arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a fantastic stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
