Our top Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:

When to reserve a Ocracoke rental & When to go:

  • The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
  • Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring months is an excellent way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines which often include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to pick the perfect rental:

  • Start by choosing vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group requires. Two If By Sea I: Fabulous views of Silver Lake Harbor. has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available online. If not, email or call the property owner before you book the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Does your group require specific amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.

More considerations:

  • We recommend storing the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out and about. Protect your property!
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected everything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to propel more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
