Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Cost saving strategies:

  • The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Summer is high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, consider changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property management companies usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to select the perfect rental home in the Ocracoke area:

  • First and foremost, have your group agree to vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Secret Cedars: Soundfront, perfect kayaking or water activities. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available online. If not, email the property management company before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or charges applied to your agreement.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

Know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're away. Protect your property!
  • During arrival, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your home life. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
