Getting the best vacation property experience:

Get the most from your spending budget:

  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which often include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Planning, picking, and booking yourvacation home:

  • Start by having your family choose trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Secret Cedars: Soundfront, perfect kayaking or water activities. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is almost always available online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before booking the property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to determine what is optimal for your group.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or could be applied to your contract.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke destination you love, search for properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.

Have a great stay:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many concerns.
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To make certain damages are not attributed to your family's stay, inspect the property for any problem areas when you arrive. text the host right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
