Tips and Tricks to get the optimal Ocracoke vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Summer is high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best value, shift your family's Ocracoke vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can book, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved early. Booking your rental property up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain coupons for local shops and restaurants.

Finding the perfect rental in the Ocracoke area:

  • Select a group lead, choose your vacation week, and select a budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Beautiful Canalfront Cottage, Perfect for Couples! has 1 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available online. Otherwise, reach out to the property owner before you book the rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke destination you long to visit, search for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
  • If your family is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some hosts charge additional pet fees.

More tips for your stay:

  • Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • At Check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of problems.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
