Tips to get the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Summer months are high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the best vacation home for your budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities.
  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby shops and restaurants.

How to choose the best vacation rental in Ocracoke:

  • Select a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and select a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your family needs. The Marina House: Pet friendly near harbor with off-site pool privileges has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking pages. If they are not listed, call the host before reserving the home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what configuration is suitable for your family.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property manager about your furry family members before booking.

Advice for a terrific stay:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • At Check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a fantastic resource to find the best local scenic spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let crooks spoil your trip.
  • Upon check-out, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good reviews to propel more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
