Tricks and tips to get the very best rental home experience:

Sticking to your budget:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Book your rental property in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have money saving offers on nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and select a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Still Point: Luxurious, spacious, exceptional waterfront home. has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the property owner before reserving your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to establish what configuration is right for your family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask your host about your furry family members before booking.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.

Have a wonderful stay:

  • Add the property manager's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you are away. Keep your property safe!
  • To make sure damages aren't attributed to your visit, note any problem areas during check in. Get in touch with the host immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a terrific resource to find the best local beaches.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at departure. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a great vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
