Booking the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are high season in the Ocracoke area. Reserving a rental home in the Fall or Spring is a great way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area travel guides which include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Select vacation dates and maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Island House: Dog friendly, 3-stop elevator, screen porch, canalfront, boat dock has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible on booking pages. If not, contact the host before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
  • Does your group require unique amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .

Advice for a great stay:

  • Take a copy of the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
