Our top Ocracoke rental booking tips:

When to book & When to go:

  • The earlier your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved early. Reserving your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Summer time is high season in Ocracoke. Book your rental property in Fall or Spring months to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Booking websites often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have coupons for local tours and attractions.

Narrow your Search:

  • Select vacation week and budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Island House: Dog friendly, 3-stop elevator, screen porch, canalfront, boat dock has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly accessible online. Otherwise, contact the property owner before reserving your rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you are crazy about, look for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.

During your stay:

  • Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To make certain damages are not linked to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Speak to the host immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be respectful. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
