Tips to get the perfect rental home experience:
Get the best rental home value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best value, change your family's Ocracoke trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Many property management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guide magazines that include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Planning, picking, and booking yourrental home:
- Start by selecting vacation dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Treasure Chest/Charming 1 BR Waterfront Accommodation has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before booking the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what is right for your vacation group.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
Have a fantastic stay:
- Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Note any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
- Upon check-out, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on good feedback to drive new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
