Tricks and tips to get the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:
Sticking to your rental home budget:
- To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- The earlier you can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Look for your local Ocracoke area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning, selecting, and booking your Ocracoke rental home:
- Select a group lead, select your vacation dates, and select a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Susan's Island Villa: Condo convenient to restaurants and shops. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before booking the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your trip.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your group is bringing pets, you will need a pet-friendly rental. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
Considerations for your stay:
- Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute is filed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of concerns.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a great source for finding the best local beaches.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a excellent stay? Most rental managers make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
