Tricks and tips to get the optimal Ocracoke rental home experience:

Sticking to a spending budget:

  • Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • The earlier your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your rental home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • Some owners offer rate reductions for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides contain discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • To start, have your family select date ranges and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. The 'L': Located in a quiet private setting. Dock. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the property manager before booking the vacation home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is best for your family.
  • If there's an individual Ocracoke attraction you simply love, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs applied to your invoice.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
  • Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a fantastic resource to find the best local beaches.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let burglars spoil your trip.
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
