Rental home tips and tricks:

Sticking to your budget:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To get the best vacation home for your budget, we suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Ocracoke restaurants, tours, and activities.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which often include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning and choosing the perfect Ocracoke vacation home:

  • Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and select a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Pickled Ocra: Pet friendly, sandy beach, beautiful sunsets. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before you book your rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.

During your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave feedback! Property owners rely on good ratings to drive future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
